Sounds of the System Panel TennoCon 2022: Submit Your Questions!

Greetings, sound loving Tenno!

TennoCon simply isn’t TennoCon without a Sounds of the System Panel, where the talented folks who work on the game’s music, voiceover, and sound design come together to share their knowledge of all things audio.

We would love to have you and your questions included in this year’s panel. Please use this thread to ask any questions you’d like our panelists to answer as it relates to the music in the game, recording and / or directing voiceover artists, creating the various sounds you hear throughout the game, etc.

We are particularly interested in answering questions about The New War and Angels of the Zariman updates, but please feel free to ask whatever burning sound questions you may have!

We’ll be accepting questions until this thread closes on June 10th. Note that we will not be able to answer every question that is asked.

Thanks, and be sure to listen for your questions during TennoCon on July 16th!

How do you decide on what voice direction to give? Is it really general and the VA decides mostly, or do you go for something in mind for the character, or is there an overarching theme?

I really like Vala Glarios' voice work for her manner of speech and that kind of unplaceable accent. Are there any stories behind the voice direction for her?

Question:

How is the deaf taken into consideration during the design of sound-based gameplay elements

Has there been ideas that have been suggested for sound-based gameplay elements that never made it into the live build because of deaf and hard of hearing players?

For example, I know there are some sound cues like the Zariman Accolades and syndicate medallions which have been tuned after launch but these cues do not exist for deaf players.

Another example is the demolysts sound cues, the small pixel indicator sure is nice but it is very hard to spot and even normal hearing people have trouble with the demolysts sounds over other sounds that exists.

Ex. Being able to hear hostages within locked cells. I learned this just existed this week and no similar cue exists for us deaf players.

Q1 - Industry question: How do you find and select voice actors for the game? In terms of connections, are there VA (voice actor) agencies that you ask? Do you ever have a certain voice actor in mind who may not have worked on the game before that you'd ask?

Q2 - Do you ever play back some of the older frames such as Hydroid and feel like remaking their audio? Do you have the freedom/availability to choose work like this, or are you pretty much always busy with big upcoming content that the whole studio is working on?

Q3 - At what stage of something do you start making sounds for it? Do frames need to be fully animated with VFX before getting sounds? Do environments only need some concept art before planning an audio profile? Does it ever work the other way where art and VFX follows your sound design instead?

What’s the name of the song that plays on the main menu as you load up the game on the patch notes screen? You’ve released every song on warframe besides that one and why is that?

What about latest Prime trailers' music (Octavia, Gara, Nidus)? Did I miss them releasing it?

I'm not sure if this counts, but with soundtracks from the Deadlock Protocol, Railjack, and such. Is there any plans to make them into somachords?

I'd love to properly appreciate the songs in-game at my orbiter.

Another question, with shawzins and even Octavia, has there ever been considerations for more classical instruments such as piano, violin, and such? Violins are my personal favorite instrument.

Have you guys ever thought about remaking Xaku's dashing SFX? I'm a huge Xaku main (3 forma and counting), but I feel like the sound for his armor moving when he dashes feels... off. It sounds almost meaty, like someone was throwing a ribeye into a sawmill. It'd be nice to have it be more metallic-like, cause I don't believe Xaku wears meat armor.

Does he?

You can have this new song in your Orbiter (i've this song in my own Orbiter), and you found it in the Zariman missions (somachord tones). This tileset have 3 new songs ("Canticle", "On Corroded Wings" and "The Offering")

It's this song (my fav with "Your Creator", and "On Corroded Wings" reminds me Diablo desert-themes) :

I have a few silly and a couple serious questions

Silly questions.

#1 would Quinn and Hombask be okay making a few new lines that involve switching places? Hon would be able to turn Quinn's parts into a furnished area to show off what we can buy... And Quinn would be closer to the elevator with a personal place to put stuff and feel less like a blank npc? Am that question too long?

#2 what sound was used for the Juggernaut always wanted to ask that

#3 I'd would love to hear Cavaleros actors real opinion on the weapons his character sells.

Serious question

#1 is there any blooper worthy material for all of us to enjoy?

#2 What sound was use for the Keshegs 2nd and 4th swing, it is the most satisfying to hear.

Q1: I really like the idea that make those angels and decoration in Zariman looks like flowing liquid metal. How do you make the sound of angels?

Q2: I notice that you add some new music for corpus ship after updat 28, will they become somachord tones? Can't wait to play them in orbiter!

Q3: The style of music and art in Zariman is both elegant and horrible. I'm really curious about your design concept.
